Madison Mainwaring holds a B.A. in English from Middlebury College and an M.A. in Histoire et civilisations from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, where her thesis on female spectatorship at the Paris Opera earned a mention très bien. At Yale she will pursue her interests in 19th-century French cultural history, and plans to continue researching the female gaze and women’s artistry in the Romantic ballet. In 2018, she won the Naomi Schor Memorial Award for the best graduate student essay at the Nineteenth-Century French Studies Colloquium for her paper “Ballet and Celebrity at the Paris Opera.”
