Fall 2021 Online Placement Exam & Preregistration

Overview for Online Placement Exam (Fall 2021)

Exam Dates: March 15, 9 am EDT to March 26, 5 pm EDT.

 
All students who have not yet studied French at Yale (except for those who have no previous formal or informal exposure to French whatsoever) are expected to take the Departmental placement exam prior to course preregistration.  
 
The Department strongly recommends that students who earned a score of 5 on the Advanced Placement exam, a 6 or 7 on the Advanced-Level International Baccalaureate (IB) exam, a Common European Framework rating of C1 , or an A or B on the GCE A-Level exam take the placement exam in order to be directed to the most appropriate course.
 
Results:
Placement results will be posted by 5 PM on April 5 on Canvas within the “French Placement Test Site 21-22” - link at the end of the page. 
 
It is your responsibility to check your Placement results. 
 
NOTE: Students who are considering study abroad over the summer or next fall are advised to take the placement test NOW. 
 
Placement exam results remain valid for one calendar year.
 
If you are placed in FREN 110, FREN 121, FREN 130, FREN140 or FREN 150, or if you are continuing into one of these courses, you MUST complete online Preference Selection in order to secure a place in a section.
 
Please note that FREN 110 and FREN 121 are FALL TERM ONLY courses. 
(FREN 120 is open only to students who completed FREN 110.)
 
 

Online Preference Selection (for Fall 2021)

Tuesday April 6th, 9 am to April 21, 5 pm EDT

 

Students who have taken the French Department’s placement exam should preregister (via Preference Selection) for the course in which they were placed. 
 
Continuing students should complete Preference Selection, if required, for the next course in the sequence.
 

Graduate and professional students cannot access Preference Selection. They should contact the Language Program Director: ruth.koizim@yale.edu(link sends e-mail) (until June 30, 2021) with their course section request.

L1 –> Preregister for <FREN 110> - Matuku Ngame

L2 –> Preregister for <FREN 121> - Candace Skorupa 

L3–> Preregister for <FREN 130> - Ruth Koizim 

L4–> Preregister for  <FREN 140> - Soumia Koundi 

L5–> Preregister for <FREN 150> - Françoise Schneider 

After entering your Yale NetID and Password, you should select the specified number of preferences from a list of available sections for your assigned level.  Try, if you can, to choose different time slots. The computer will assign places randomly, taking your preferences into account. 

Section assignments will be available by 5PM on Friday, April 30, 2021.

*It is your responsibility to verify your section assignment.

To secure your place in the section, you must attend ALL class meetings, including during the Drop/ Add period.

If you missed Preference Selection or were not assigned a section, or if scheduling changes make it necessary for you to switch to a different section, you should contact the appropriate course chair. You should also continue to attend a section of that course until you are sure to have a place in another one.

General Information for Online Testing

Dates for Online Testing 

 

  • Early Placement Testing for Fall 2021 (Returning Students Only): Monday, March 15 at 9:00 am (EDT) through Friday, March 26 at 5:00 PM (EDT)
  • Placement Tests for Fall 2021 Semester (Tentative): Thursday, July 1 at 9:00 am (EDT) through Sunday, August 15 at 12:00 noon (EDT).

Results

 

Unless otherwise noted, placement results are provided in one of the following ways: 1) shown on-screen upon completion of the test, 2) posted to Canvas prior to the start of the semester, or 3) distributed by faculty from the department.

Technical Requirements for Online Testing

 

Please review the system recommendations for the OWL Testing system(link is external). The preferred browser is Google Chrome in Guest Mode. You should also use a current version of MacOS or Windows (not an electronic tablet or phone). Prior to taking the test, you can check that your system meets the requirements by first logging in(link is external), then navigating to Tools > Device Check.
