Event description:

This exam is for graduate students who need to fulfill a translation requirement.

Dear French Translation Test participants,

Despite the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 virus, we will be going ahead with the French Translation Exam - with modifications.

First of all, we will send you the translation passages via email and you will be able to take the test at the time of your choosing between 9:00AM (EDT) Tuesday, 24 March and 5:00PM (EDT) Friday, 27 March.

You will have a maximum of TWO hours to complete the test. You may use a print dictionary but no other resources, whether print or online. Please be sure that you have a good dictionary for the exam!

All exams must be submitted to me no later than 6PM on Friday, 27 March. You may write out your translations by hand, scan them and send them to me as an email attachment. If you prefer, you may type your translations as a word document (NOT Google docs, please) and send that to me by the deadline. Either way is fine.

You must translate BOTH passages. If you don’t quite finish your second passage but the quality of what you’ve done is high, you should be ok. Perfection or publishable quality translation are not the standards we apply. The rating system is holistic: you must show your ability to render an accurate translation, not merely the gist of the passage. Verb tenses, pronouns, negations: these are elements that matter. Idioms can be rendered literally if necessary.

Please do not hesitate to contact me directly if you have questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Ruth Koizim
