Updated November 2021

The French Placement Test for Spring 2022 has been extended through Monday, November 29, 2021 at  5 pm.

Overview for Online Placement Exam (Spring 2022)

All students who have not yet studied French at Yale are expected to take the Departmental placement exam prior to course preregistration.  If you have absolutely no previous formal or informal exposure to French, you should register for L1 (FREN 110).

The Department strongly recommends that ALL STUDENTS take the placement exam – EVEN students who earned a score of 5 on the Advanced Placement exam, a 6 or 7 on the Advanced-Level International Baccalaureate (IB) exam, a Common European Framework rating of C1, or an A or B on the GCE A-Level exam.  This will ensure that you will be directed to the most appropriate course for your level.

The French Placement Test is available to all students at Yale University who are not presently enrolled in a Yale French course and who have not taken the Placement Test in the last year.

The French placement exam will be available from Thursday, October 28, 2021 at 9 am until Wednesday November 3, 2021 at 5 pm.

Preference Selection is only for Yale College undergraduate students.  GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL students cannot access Preference Selection.  They should contact the Language Program Director, Candace Skorupa, with their course section request at: candace.skorupa@yale.edu
