Plan to take a French class?

All students who have previously studied French and intend to study French at Yale must take a placement test to determine which class they need. Absolute beginners or students who have already taken French at Yale do not need to take the placement test.

Combined PhD Programs & Certificates

In collaboration with other departments, we offer three combined PhD Programs and seven certificates of concentration. Undertaking any one of these in addition to the PhD in French means carefully planning in advance, as the specific admissions criteria and completion requirements for each option vary.
