French Grants and Prizes

Research Grants

The French Department offers two research grants to students majoring in French: the Kenneth Cornell French Major Research Grant and the James T. King French Major Research Grant.

Each grant provides up to $2,000 to one successful applicant per year. Undergraduates who declare a major in French or a double major that includes French (and who will graduate with this major) may apply in the fall semester for a research grant to fund a short travel period, usually undertaken during the winter break.

  • Applicants should submit a one-page research proposal, including a breakdown of expenses, to the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Submit the application using the link at the bottom of this page.
  • No letter of recommendation is required, but applicants are required to consult with a faculty member in the French department about their proposed research trip, and should state this in their grant proposal.
  • Within one month of returning to the US, the grant recipient will be asked to provide a one-page report of their research trip to the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Funds must be used before the first day of classes of the final semester of the senior year.

Undergraduate Prizes

The French Department also offers three prestigious prizes to recognize the outstanding academic achievements of our students.
